Environmental Services

The Division of Environmental Services is directly involved with the management of the housekeeping and landscaping contracts for the Miller School of Medicine. The services provided to the SOM include housekeeping, landscaping, exterior window cleaning, medical and solid waste removal, recycling and document destruction.

  • Housekeeping: cleaning is segmented into the following categories: (see attached schedule)
    • Weekly cleaning for offices, labs.
    • Daily cleaning for clinical spaces, childcare facilities and all common areas.
  • Landscaping
    • Groundskeepers tend to the landscaping throughout the SOM. This entails the mowing of lawns, pick sticking parking lots, collecting of debris around buildings, installation of seasonal plants, maintenance and repair of irrigations systems and exterior pest control.
  • Medical and Solid Waste
    • The contracted vendor is responsible for the collection and disposal of medical waste and solid waste produced by the SOM in a manner that and fashion which adheres to both state and federal guideline
  • Recycling and Document Destruction Program
    • We currently provide the SOM with a centralized shredding program at no cost to the departments. We provide recycling bins to all departments on the Medical Campus which request to be included in this program. We are scheduled to remove empty the bins on a weekly basis (see attached schedule).
    • We also provide the service of document destruction for items kept in storage which the University is no longer required to maintain. There is a fee of $0.10 per pound for this service. The departments can contact the contract administrator for further instructions fkaniews@med.miami.edu.
    • We also provide the service of electronic media. Magnetic and optical storage media like floppies and CDs may also be turned over to Environmental Services for shredding. Remember that audio- and video-tapes, transparencies and other audio-visual media may contain sensitive information and so require secure disposal. Contact Environmental Services to arrange for media pickup (we do not generally have receptacles set out for this). Please try to bundle what you have so that only one pickup visit is necessary.
  • Battery Recycling: On a smaller scale, batteries are gathered and shipped to a recycler who in turn eliminates the hazardous material they contain in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
