Physical Plant

The Department of Physical Plant is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all physical facilities of the University and provides 24-hour service, seven days a week. After hours, Physical Plant, together with campus security, receives calls and complaints and dispatches a staff member to immediately assess the problem. The Department of Physical Plant completes work in the following areas:

  • Air Conditioning: Replace coolers, chillers, compressors, and AC controls. Regulate temperature.
  • Electricity: Maintain all electricity equipment, panels, switches, electric motors. Also repair electricity conduction problems related to computers and copy machines.
  • Plumbing: Install and repair water lines, toilets and plumbing associated with ice machines.
  • Painting: Touch up paint on ground floors, common areas, hallways, offices, water hydrants, and exterior of buildings.
  • Carpentry: Build shelves for laboratories and offices. Repair chairs and cabinets.

Maintenance of Stock Room
Physical Plant also maintains the stock rook and ensures that all related parts and equipment for needed repairs are continually stocked. Stock room items include special plumbing supplies, electrical equipment, plumbing equipment, parts for ice machines, refrigerators, electrical supplies, among others.

Customer Service
All basic operation services may be requested by calling the Customer Service Desk (CSD) at 305 243-6375. Reports of deficiencies or requests for services will be recorded and dispatched to the proper shop, area, or personnel within the Physical Plant Department. The CSD is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For all other times, services can be obtained by calling 305 243-6000.

Work Orders
To officially request a repair or job to be done, a work order form must be filled out and faxed to 305 243-5882. Services can also be requested by clicking on the link below and completing an online request.

Work order requests, once approved, can take anywhere from 2-3 days to two weeks to complete depending on the type of work requested.

Physical Plant Staff
The Department of Physical Plant employs 36 individuals, including five general mechanics, two licensed plumbers, three electricians, and three licensed A/C and refrigeration mechanics.

Zone mechanics are those individuals in charge of preventative maintenance (e.g. greasing motors, changing AC filters, etc.) and are assigned to specific buildings on the medical campus and are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of these buildings.

Building mechanics are responsible for light plumbing projects (e.g. overflowing toilets), wall/floor repairs, ceiling tile replacement, shelf or door repairs and checking fire extinguishers monthly.

All Physical Plant staff adhere to Environmental Health and Safety Department standards and are trained to properly use face masks, gas masks, goggles (for welding projects), and weight belts when necessary.
