Overview

The Department of Facilities and Support Services encompasses all of the operational support services related to the infrastructure of the University of Miami medical campus-from the paint on the walls to the telecommunications electronic components that support the day-to-day operations of the medical campus.

The department is broad in scope. Projects handled within the department range from radiation protection to repairing a light fixture or air conditioning unit. In addition, Facilities and Support Services has oversight responsibility for all of the operational support services on the medical campus as well as planning for future space concerns. The department, for example, is responsible for evaluating whether new space will be acquired through new construction or through the purchase and/or leasing of additional buildings. The department also handles the funding of such projects.

Funding
Funding for future expansion projects on the medical campus will come from additional funds obtained from donors as well as programs that will generate sufficient capital to build new facilities. A framework for development that looks ahead at the next ten years has already been developed and outlines the types of buildings that will be needed, where they should be located, and what types of acquisitions will be required to reach the goal.

In addition to using outside capital, some compression will be necessary within existing buildings on campus (e.g. consolidating offices, relocating certain offices to adequate space) to accommodate aggressive growth. Further, renting additional space off campus is also available.

Remaining on the leading edge of technology is an intrinsic mission of the department in order to minimize overhead. To that end, Facilities and Support Services continues to implement state-of-the-art energy management programs for the operation and maintenance of the various facilities on the medical campus.
